AIT-4 Tapes
AIT-4 was released in 2005 and had double the capacity and transfer speed of AIT-3 with 200 GB capacity and 24 MB/s transfer rate. A new tape formulation was used to make AIT 4 tapes, AME-2 (Advanced Metal Evaporated 2). AIT-4 media is based on AME II technology, which enables the media's extraordinary area recording density, as well as its high durability. AME-II media realizes high output and low noise through an improved metal evaporated method resulting in smaller magnetic particles and smoother tape surface minimizing the spacing loss between the magnetic head and the magnetic layer. Unfortunately, this prevents the tapes from being backwards compatible. R-MIC is also available in fourth generation and provides quick media loads and allows fast searches to data. The R-MIC chip contains the media cartridge's log system, search map and user-definable information, allowing the AIT4 drive to advance at a high speed directly to any file on the recording media.
