|
Travan is a magnetic tape technology developed by the 3M Company used for storage of or to backup data. Mostly used in mass storage and computer backups, subsequent versions of Travan tapes and drives have been developed that provide greater data capacity whilst retaining the standard 8mm width of the original. Originally Travan magnetic data backup tapes could hold about 400MBs of data native but more recent versions of Travan backup tapes can hold up to 20 GB native with a transfer rate of up to 4 MB/s. Travan tape format has been standardized by the QIC consortium and is backward compatible with older QIC standards. It is an ideal back up solution for the low end market users, that is, for desktops and PCs. However a wide range of Travan data cartridges or tapes also caters to businesses. Sony, HP, Travan, Imation and IBM tapes are available.
