LTO cartridges (all of them: LTO 1, LTO 2, LTO 3 and LTO 4) have an internal memory chip in them that transfers data to the drive or external/internal memory card reader. The Ultrium 1 CM (Cartridge Memory) has a 4 KB capacity to store vital information regarding the tape. Similarly, the LTO-2 Ultrium tape has an 8 KB memory. This includes the usage history, number of loads, past errors, etc regarding the tape. Cartridge Memory (CM) readers such as the above are capable of extracting this information and presenting it in a concise form.
