LTO 2 drives were the successor to LTO 1 tape drives and improved on them so that they have doubled capacity and double speed. With a capacity of 200 GB and a transfer speed of 40 MB/s, LTO 2 tape drives were released in 2002. With LTO-2 tape drives, the encoding format was changed to PRML (Partial Response Maximum Likelihood) which is a more efficient and effective method of encoding data. With the added advantage of being backward compatible with at least two prior generations whilst reading and with at least the prior generation when writing, LTO 2 Ultrium tape drives enable you to easily upgrade your current backup system.
