Hard Drives or Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are commonly used for storing information with desktops, PCs, networks, network servers and are now catching up with tape backup as a form data storage media for backup. This is due to the exponential growth in not only the capacities (from the 5 MB capacity in the early 1980s to the 750 GB hard drives available today, there are also plans for a hard drive with a terabyte – 1000 GB capacity) but also in reliability, performance and efficiency through faster RPM or rotation of the fixed disk and better read/write rates and higher transfer rates. IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) is a term owned by Western Digital, the equivalent from other companies is AT (AT Attached). Lots of subsequent technologies have been developed that improve upon the original IDE to increase transfer rates, etc such as EIDE (Enhanced IDE), ATAPI, Ultra ATA, etc. Some of the latest model hard disk drives have transfer rates of 3.0 GB/s SATA interfaces. The hard drives we offer are from Hewlett-Packard (HP). The hard drives we offer have capacities ranging from 80-500 GB and both IDE and SATA hard drives are available.
The other major type of hard disk drives are SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) based and are also available at Tape4Backup.
