DDS-4 tape drives are the successor to DDS-3 tape drives. With an increased capacity of 20 GB uncompressed and 40 GB compressed, DDS-4 tape drives are also faster with their data transfer rates at 3.2 MB/s whereas the DDS-3 tape drives offered 1.1 MB/s transfer rate. DDS-4 tape drives are backward compatible with DDS-1, DDS-2 and DDS-3 tapes, allowing for easy and affordable upgrades. DDS 4 tape drives are ideal for entry level servers and small networks. DDS is advantageous over alternative backup systems in terms of capacity, cost per megabyte and reliability. This is because DDS tapes are required to meet strict grade standards and each DDS tape is certified as error free.
